How to File a Grievance
Initial Steps (Informal)
Talk to your Steward: Immediately contact your AFGE union steward or local representative to discuss the issue.
Attempt Informal Resolution: Discuss the problem with your immediate supervisor, often with your steward present, to try and resolve it quickly.
Formal Grievance Filing
Obtain the official grievance form below or from your local AFGE Steward.
Write the Grievance: Clearly state:
The action you're grieving (date, time, location).
The specific articles/sections of the contract or regulation violated.
The remedy (what you want).
Your union representative's name.
Submit on Time: File the written grievance with the "first-step official" (usually your supervisor) within the time limit (e.g., 14 days of discovering the issue), or the union can help you request an extension.
Follow Formal Steps: If unresolved, the grievance moves to higher management levels, with your union representing you at each stage as defined in your Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA/Contract).
